Deputy principal killed, 4 injured in stabbing attack at Mexican school
A deputy principal was killed and four other people were injured in a stabbing attack at a secondary school in northern Mexico, according to officials and local media. Two former students were arrested at the scene.
The attack happened Thursday at Secondary School No. 13 in La Union, a rural community in the municipality of Torreon, Coahuila. State authorities said the attackers used bladed weapons and ruled out reports of firearms and explosives.
Coahuila Attorney General Federico Fernandez Montañez told MVS Noticias that the two suspects were former students who lived in the same community. Both are adults, according to the state government.
Fernandez said they attacked people at random and had no particular teacher or student as a target. The suspects chose the school because it was close to their homes and they were familiar with its community.
The state government listed the four injured people as two teachers, a student and a woman. It said one teacher was in serious condition, the student’s condition was not disclosed and the woman was stable.
Fernandez said initial examinations of the suspects’ belongings and phones showed that they followed online content about people who had carried out attacks at universities and secondary schools in other countries.
“By their own account, they wanted to be part of or imitate these people, and that is why they decided to carry out these attacks,” he told MVS Noticias.
The attorney general said both suspects came from fractured family backgrounds and consumed violent content on social media.
Asked whether the attack was motivated by hatred of women, Fernandez said the suspects acknowledged knowing online groups that promoted such hatred. However, they had not explicitly said they directed the attack exclusively against women.
