A small plane has crashed at an airport north of Seattle in Washington state, injuring an unknown number of people, airport officials said. A photo from the scene showed a large plume of dark smoke.

The crash happened on Thursday afternoon on the west side of Paine Field in Everett, according to a statement from the airport. An exact time was not immediately provided.

The airport confirmed injuries but did not say how many people were hurt or how seriously. The aircraft’s type, the number of people aboard and the circumstances and cause of the crash were not immediately known.

The photo showed a thick column of smoke rising from an area beyond the airport’s runways and taxiways. The aircraft itself was not visible in the image.

Airport officials asked people to avoid the area and said more details would be released as they became available.

Paine Field serves commercial passenger flights and general aviation and is next to Boeing’s Everett aircraft assembly plant.

The circumstances and cause of the crash were also unknown.
