4 injured after construction rig collapses onto street in Miami
Four people were injured after a construction rig collapsed onto vehicles and trapped two workers at a construction site in Miami, according to officials. All four victims suffered only minor injuries.
The collapse was reported at about 8:06 a.m. Monday at Brickell Bay Drive and Southeast 12th Street. Miami Fire Rescue Chief Robert Hevia said crews arrived to find what initially appeared to be a crane collapse but was later identified as a pile rig, a machine used in foundation work.
A woman driving south on Brickell Bay Drive saw the rig falling in front of her and was able to reverse her white BMW before getting out through the back of the vehicle, Hevia said. The rig landed on the car, which caught fire.
Two construction workers, ages 27 and 29, were trapped inside a construction box beneath the fallen rig. Firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire while a technical rescue team cut through the box and freed both workers.
The 47-year-old rig operator jumped from the machine as it began to tip over and suffered minor injuries to his lower body. He, the two workers and the BMW driver were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
About 50 firefighters and 20 units responded. Officials said 18 construction workers were accounted for, while crews continued to contain a diesel spill and the construction company prepared to remove the rig and damaged vehicles.
