North Carolina Democrats withdraw support for state House candidate over resurfaced posts
North Carolina Democrats have withdrawn their support for a state House candidate after resurfaced social media posts in which she advocated violence against political opponents.
The Guilford County Democratic Party said they “unequivocally reject and condemn” posts by Shelly Headen, the Democratic nominee in House District 62, saying they violated the party’s values. The North Carolina House Democratic Caucus also said it would not support her candidacy.
One post, made about a year ago, said: “I think our only hope is an attack on US soil… preferably Alabama, Louisiana… where the stupid people live.”
The Charlotte Observer reported that other posts attributed to Headen included: “I think America is beyond peaceful protest!” and “Ready for the MAGAs to die off!!” Breitbart News also reported that she posted a photograph at a Nazi concentration camp memorial with the caption: “This is where Trump supporters belong.”
Headen told WFDD that she did not remember making the posts but apologized to those hurt by them. “They’re doing what’s best for the party, and that’s what they should do,” she said of the decision to withdraw support, adding that she had received death threats since the posts resurfaced.
Ballots have already been sent out, meaning Headen cannot withdraw and Democrats cannot replace her. She will remain on the ballot against Republican incumbent John Blust.
