McConnell returns to Senate for 1st vote since June fall

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell has returned to the Senate floor for the first time since suffering a serious fall in June, ending an absence that had raised questions about his health.

“Today, I’ll cast my first Senate vote since I took a bad fall back in June,” McConnell said in a statement Monday. “I’m really looking forward to being back on the Senate floor and seeing my colleagues.”

McConnell said his recovery had been “long and often frustrating” and that lingering effects of childhood polio had made it more difficult. He said he is continuing physical therapy and is not yet fully recovered.

“I will do my best to be present for tough votes when our Conference needs me,” McConnell added.

Fox News reported that its team saw McConnell leave his Washington home in an SUV, giving a thumbs-up as he got inside.

McConnell, 84, had not voted in person since his office announced his hospitalization on June 14. His lengthy absence fueled growing speculation about his health and whether he could continue serving in the Senate.
