2 Colorado troopers shot; suspect killed after manhunt
Two Colorado State Patrol troopers were shot during a traffic stop in Teller County, Colorado, and the suspect was later killed in a shootout with sheriff’s deputies, according to officials. Both troopers are expected to recover.
The first shooting happened at about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 24 near Piney Point Lane, near Woodland Park, where a trooper attempted to stop a vehicle, according to Colorado State Patrol Colonel Matthew Packard. The driver immediately opened fire, striking the trooper before fleeing.
A second trooper arrived within minutes and encountered the suspect vehicle as it traveled in the opposite direction. The driver opened fire again, striking the second trooper while he was inside his patrol vehicle.
Both troopers drove themselves across Highway 24 to a hospital and walked into the emergency room. One trooper was struck multiple times and remains under treatment, while the other is no longer receiving treatment.
Authorities issued a Blue Alert, put nearby neighborhoods under lockdown and released images of the suspect vehicle. At 9:24 a.m., a homeowner reported that a contractor at her home matched the suspect’s description.
Deputies found the vehicle and suspect one minute later. The suspect opened fire on deputies two minutes after the initial tip and a deputy returned fire, according to Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell,
The suspect was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead at noon. His identity has not been released pending confirmation from the coroner and notification of next of kin.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is leading the investigation, with assistance from the FBI, Colorado State Patrol and the Teller County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators will examine the suspect’s motive and the deputy-involved shooting.
