Dolly Parton dies at 80
Dolly Parton, the global music icon, songwriter, actress and philanthropist, has died peacefully in Nashville, Tennessee, her family announced. She was 80.
“I am representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean,” her nephew, Bryan Seaver, said in an initial video statement on Tuesday afternoon.
The family later posted a second statement to Parton’s social media accounts, describing her as a beloved singer, songwriter, philanthropist, actress, playwright and author.
“A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family,” the statement said. “Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience.”
Born in rural Sevier County, Tennessee, in 1946, Parton was one of 12 children. She moved to Nashville after graduating from high school and built a career from her songwriting before becoming a recording star in her own right.
Her country hits included “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You,” which later became a global hit for Whitney Houston. Parton also became a film star, notably appearing in “9 to 5” and “Steel Magnolias.”
Parton was also a humanitarian whose philanthropic work had a lasting impact. In lieu of flowers, the family asked for donations to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Carl Thomas Dean, who died in 2025. Her mother, Avie Lee Caroline Owens, died in 2003, while her father, Robert Lee Parton Sr., died in 2000.
In an interview published Friday, Parton told People that she was dealing with “some hard times with my health” after putting aside her own medical issues while caring for her husband.
“Even though I’m still healin’, I’m still workin’,” Parton told People.
President Trump said he would order flags lowered across the United States for one week beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday. A small private service will be held for immediate family.
