8 victims confirmed dead in Montana shooting and house fire; suspect also dead
Eight victims, including four juveniles and four adults, were killed in a shooting and house fire in Billings, Montana that happened on Sunday, police confirmed. The suspect also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The shooting was reported at about 6:01 p.m. Sunday at a home on White Star Circle in Yellowstone County, after a 911 caller reported a family disturbance. Dispatchers could hear gunfire during the call.
When law enforcement officers arrived, they saw a man in the backyard and then heard more gunshots. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but later died.
Smoke was coming from the house before it became fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were unable to enter immediately because the scene had not been confirmed safe, and the fire spread throughout the home before crews were able to suppress it.
Billings police now believe eight victims, four juveniles and four adults, died in the incident, according to an update released on Tuesday.
Investigators are continuing efforts to recover the victims’ remains. Police said the condition and structural integrity of the home require recovery and investigative work to be conducted carefully and methodically.
The scene is expected to remain active for several more days. Authorities have not released details about the circumstances of the shooting or the suspect’s motive.
