Zelenskyy says Russia’s fighting to drag war out: Unbiased Updates, May 27, 2025

There’s a new blow to peace talks as Ukraine accuses Russia of prepping fresh attacks while Moscow calls a move back by the U.S. “dangerous.” Plus, a van barrels into a crowd of soccer fans during a championship parade, leaving dozens hurt. These stories and more highlight your Unbiased Updates for Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
Russia does not plan to end the war anytime soon: Zelenskyy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserted that Russia has no intentions of ending the war and is currently gearing up for new offensives.
Overnight, in a new address, Zelenskyy called for tougher sanctions from the U.S. and Europe after another round of long-range drone attacks lit up both sides of the border.
Germany’s new chancellor has responded by lifting range restrictions on Western weapons for the first time. That means Ukraine can now strike targets inside Russia using U.S., UK, French and German weapons. The Kremlin called it a “dangerous move,” warning it undermines any chance for peace talks.
Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit the German capital on Wednesday, May 28.
Parade crash not an act of terrorism: Liverpool police

Liverpool authorities continue to investigate an incident in which a gray minivan plowed into a crowd during the F.C.’s victory parade on Monday, May 26. A 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area is in police custody.
However, police are not treating the crash as terrorism, saying the man acted alone.
Medical officials said 27 people were hospitalized in the incident, and police said a “large number” of people were injured but treated without being taken to the hospital. Fire officials said four people, including one child, were trapped beneath the vehicle used in the incident. NHS University Hospitals requested via social media that people refrain from calling to find out information on patients.
A new video from the scene shows debris scattered across the road and police tape sealing off the area — a contrast to the celebration that came just before.
At least 27 people went to the hospital, including two with serious injuries. Four others got trapped beneath the van and had to be rescued. The parade had drawn hundreds of thousands of fans into the streets.
Three more fugitives recaptured after New Orleans jail escape; two still at large
Authorities have recaptured three more inmates who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans earlier this month, leaving two still at large.
Texas state troopers arrested Jermaine Donald, 42, and Leo Tate, 31, on May 26 in Walker County after a high-speed chase. Both men were initially jailed on serious charges, including murder and weapons violations. That same day, police in Baton Rouge arrested Lenton Vanburen, 26, who had been held on firearms and parole violations.
Investigators say the inmates escaped May 16 by removing a toilet, cutting through steel bars, and climbing through a wall. They then scaled a fence using blankets. A jail maintenance worker, Sterling Williams, is accused of helping by shutting off water to the cell. He told investigators he was threatened by an inmate but faces malfeasance and escape-related charges.
Eight of the 10 escaped inmates have now been caught. Authorities are still searching for Antoine Massey, 32, and Derrick Groves, 27, both considered armed and dangerous.
At least 13 people have been arrested for allegedly aiding the inmates. State officials have deployed auditors to review security failures at the jail as the investigation continues.
FBI reopens three high-profile cases from Biden era
The FBI announced it will revisit three high-profile cases that nearly disappeared during the Biden administration. Deputy Director Dan Bongino said Monday, May 26, that investigators allocated new resources to cases the public had not forgotten, including the leak of the Supreme Court’s draft opinion that overturned Roe v. Wade.
Another case being revisited includes the discovery of cocaine in the White House, as authorities never quite found out where it came from. The Secret Service closed that case without naming a suspect. However, Bongino said the FBI has launched a new investigation into the incident and has made progress.
In addition, the FBI said it has new leads in the unsolved pipe bomb case, where explosive devices were planted outside both national party headquarters just one day before the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
Bongino called these three incidents “potential public corruption cases that have garnered public interest.”
King Charles to deliver the Speech from the Throne in Canada

King Charles III delivered Canada’s Speech from the Throne on Tuesday, a rare move meant to underscore the country’s sovereignty as U.S. President Donald Trump escalates annexation rhetoric and trade pressure.
The King arrived Monday for a two-day visit, his first since ascending the throne, and formally addressed Parliament to open its 45th session. It marked the first time a monarch delivered the throne speech in Canada since Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1977.
Prime Minister Mark Carney invited Charles to speak, calling it a “historic honor that matches the weight of our times.” The King, Canada’s official head of state, received a 21-gun salute and met with Indigenous leaders and top officials.
Bloc Québécois criticized the speech, saying Carney had “chosen to drag a foreign monarch into a political exercise that should be reserved for elected officials.”
Trump has repeatedly suggested absorbing Canada as the “51st state,” prompting backlash. In a recent meeting, Carney told him, “Canada won’t be for sale, ever.”
Charles has recently signaled support for Canada through symbolic gestures, including wearing Canadian medals and planting a maple tree at Buckingham Palace.
Jennifer Lopez sparks controversy, Billie Eilish wins big at American Music Awards
The 2025 American Music Awards marked a big night for some of the nation’s top entertainers, but it didn’t pass without controversy. Jennifer Lopez hosted the show and energized the stage with a dance medley featuring some of the year’s biggest hits.
However, during her performance, Lopez kissed three of her backup dancers — a move that is now being criticized by some on social media as “queerbaiting.”
Still, the night belonged to Billie Eilish, who swept all seven of her nominated categories, including Artist, Album and Song of the Year. Beyoncé also made history by winning Favorite Female Country Artist and Favorite Country Album for “Cowboy Carter.”
Post Malone took home Favorite Male Country Artist, and Eminem grabbed his first AMA in 15 years, winning both Favorite Male Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Hip-Hop Album of the Year.
