Several feared dead in fuel tanker explosion in Kenya
Several people are feared dead and others were critically injured after a fuel tanker exploded in western Kenya, according to local media and emergency responders. People had reportedly gathered to collect fuel after the tanker was involved in an accident.
The explosion happened on Thursday along a highway connecting the western Kenyan cities of Eldoret and Webuye, in the Juakali area near Paul Boit Secondary School. The Kenya Red Cross reported a mass casualty incident, with its teams, police and firefighters responding to the scene.
Kenya’s Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association said several people who had gone to collect fuel were burned beyond recognition, while others suffered severe burns.
The Daily Nation newspaper reported at least two confirmed deaths, with responders still working to retrieve bodies trapped beneath the burned wreckage. The full casualty toll remains unclear.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sichirani said search and recovery operations were continuing and more fatalities were feared, according to the newspaper.
Medical personnel said most patients admitted to the hospital had burns covering more than 70% of their bodies. The number of people hospitalized was not immediately available.
