Florida GOP Rep. Salazar tells Trump immigration enforcement has ‘gone too far’
Some of President Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts have “gone too far,” Florida Republican Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar said in a campaign ad. Adding that Hispanic voters who helped elect him now feel betrayed and called on him to give immigrants “a dignified life.”
Salazar posted the ad on social media on Thursday as she seeks reelection in Florida’s 27th Congressional District, which covers part of Miami-Dade County and has a large Latino population. She faces Democratic nominee Eliott Rodriguez.
“Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far,” Salazar said. “In July, 50% of the 50,000 people that were detained had no criminal record.”
“Be careful what your advisors are telling you about immigration policies,” she added. “The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today.”
“You can be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery and Reagan was for communism,” she said. “I’m not talking about giving them amnesty. I’m talking about giving them a dignified life in this promised land, and only you can do that.”
The district has been strongly Republican, but some polls suggest Salazar’s reelection contest could be closer than expected.
