Remains identified as missing Texas State student Jason Landry
Human remains found in central Texas have been identified as those of Jason Landry, a college student who disappeared nearly six years ago, according to officials. Authorities have found no indication of foul play.
The Texas Attorney General’s Office said on Wednesday that DNA testing confirmed the identity of skeletal remains found by a local resident on September 8 in the 1400 block of Biggs Road in Caldwell County.
The remains were discovered near the site where Landry’s car crashed, but just outside the areas covered by earlier searches.
The University of North Texas Center for Human Identification performed the DNA analysis. Officials said the remains did not provide additional insight into the cause or manner of death.
Landry, a 21-year-old Texas State University student, disappeared in December 2020 while traveling from San Marcos to his family’s home in Missouri City, near Houston, for Christmas break. His car was found wrecked and abandoned on Salt Flat Road near Luling.
His disappearance led to repeated searches of the surrounding area and years of work by authorities trying to determine what happened after the crash.
The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office announced the discovery of skeletal remains on Saturday, saying further examination was needed to determine whether they could be identified or connected to a missing-person case.
Search efforts over the years included ground and aerial operations totaling thousands of hours. The sheriff’s office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Search and Rescue and the attorney general’s Cold Case Unit reviewed leads and re-examined the case, with volunteers also contributing to the searches.
Landry’s family has been notified of the identification. Officials asked that their privacy be respected.
