New video shows Oklahoma principal tackling school shooter
Newly released surveillance video shows the moment an Oklahoma high school principal confronted and subdued a gunman after being shot in the leg.
The shooting happened at about 2:21 p.m. on April 7 at Pauls Valley High School in Pauls Valley, south of Oklahoma City, after the suspect entered the school, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).
The gunman, identified as 20-year-old former student Victor Hawkins, was subdued by the principal and school staff, and was arrested at the scene.
The video shows a student sitting in the lobby of the school when Hawkins enters. He then appears to prepare his gun and hide behind a vending machine before stepping out and firing a single shot toward the lobby.
Hawkins then appears to point the gun toward the student. Seconds later, Principal Kirk Moore comes through a nearby door and charges at him as the suspect turns the weapon toward him. Moore then tackles him to the ground.
Principal Moore was shot in the leg during the confrontation and taken to a local hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
The District 21 District Attorney’s Office said Hawkins was formally arraigned in Garvin County District Court on April 8. He is charged with shooting with intent to kill, two counts of feloniously pointing a firearm, and carrying a weapon to a public assembly.
Hawkins is being held on $1 million bond and remains in custody. His next court date, a preliminary hearing conference, is scheduled for May 8.
The OSBI said the actions of school staff stopped Hawkins from potentially injuring more students and employees.
In a statement released days after the incident, Moore thanked the Pauls Valley community for its support and said he was recovering. “I am grateful that my instincts and training, as well as God’s hand, were available to me on Tuesday,” he said.
