Mother, 5-month-old daughter killed after boat overturns near Statue of Liberty
A mother and her 5-month-old daughter were killed and 12 others were rescued after a boat overturned near the Statue of Liberty in New York, according to officials. The vessel’s operator was arrested.
The boat overturned near Liberty Island at about 10:55 p.m. on Saturday, sending everyone on board into the water. The circumstances leading up to the capsizing were not immediately known.
The 27-year-old woman and baby girl were taken to NYU Langone Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Law enforcement sources identified them to CBS News as Sara Sanchez and Antonella Garcia.
Two Coast Guard boats, four FDNY boats, two NYPD boats and an NYPD helicopter were sent to the area. The Coast Guard said all those aboard the vessel were recovered, with the surviving passengers reported in stable condition.
The vessel’s operator was arrested after the rescue. The NYPD identified him as Manuel Hernandez, 46, of New York, and said he faces 13 counts of reckless endangerment.
The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the capsizing and whether the vessel was being operated as an illegal charter. Its investigators are working with the Coast Guard Investigative Service and the NYPD.
