Man killed, 4 officers hospitalized after exchange of gunfire in Massachusetts
A man was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police during a welfare check at a home in Lakeville, Massachusetts, according to prosecutors. Four officers were hospitalized following the incident.
The incident began at about 1:58 p.m. on Saturday when a resident went to the Lakeville Police Department to request help for a family member at 8 Heritage Hill, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz’s office. The resident reported that the family member had a firearm and was distressed and acting erratically.
Officers accompanied the resident to the home and were allowed inside. In a second-floor bedroom, they encountered 31-year-old Gregory Buckley, who was pointing a firearm at them, according to prosecutors.
Police ordered him to drop the weapon, but he refused. Gunfire was exchanged, and Buckley was struck. Officials have not said who fired first.
Officers provided first aid before Buckley was taken to Morton Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Four Lakeville officers were also taken to a hospital for evaluation and have since been released. Officials have not specified whether any of the officers were shot.
The encounter was captured on police body cameras. Massachusetts State Police detectives are investigating the shooting.
