A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck near Carson City, Nevada, on Monday evening, with shaking felt across parts of Northern California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake happened at 6:29 p.m. with an epicenter 13 miles southeast of Silver Springs and 42 miles northeast of Carson City, the USGS said. It struck at a depth of about 8 miles.

The USGS initially reported the earthquake as magnitude 5.7 before revising it down to 5.5.

USGS estimates showed strong shaking may have been felt by about 18,000 people near the epicenter, including in Silver Springs and Fallon, while another 46,000 people may have experienced moderate shaking.

More than 600,000 people may have felt noticeable, though not strong, shaking in Reno, Carson City and surrounding areas.

“Very strong jolts after slight rumbling, I thought it was a truck at first until everything started swaying and shaking,” a user in the Reno area told the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

According to user-submitted reports to the USGS, weak to light shaking was also felt as far away as Sacramento, California, and in parts of San Francisco and the Bay Area.

The Carson City-Silver Springs area lies within the northern Walker Lane, a fault system that stretches across western Nevada and eastern California, according to the USGS. The region is known for repeated earthquake swarms.
