Hiker finds remains of 2 people on Georgia mountain
A hiker discovered the remains of two people on Yonah Mountain in north Georgia, according to authorities. Investigators have not released their identities or said how long the bodies had been there.
The discovery was made at about 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, when a hiker came across the remains of two people at the mountain, according to the White County Sheriff’s Office. The mountain is near the tourist town of Helen and about 90 miles northeast of Atlanta.
The White County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Region 8 Crime Scene Unit responded to process the scene.
Authorities have not said how the two people died, or whether they were hikers. It is also not known whether the discovery is connected to any missing-person reports.
Yonah Mountain is a 3,143-foot mountain in White County, between Cleveland and Helen. It has a public trail to the summit and includes an area used for Army Ranger training. The investigation remains ongoing.
