Armed suspect lunges at Amy Acton at Ohio fair, injuring multiple people
An armed individual was arrested after knocking campaign volunteers to the ground during an appearance by Ohio Democratic candidate for governor Amy Acton at a county fair, according to party officials. Acton was not hurt, but her campaign said multiple people were injured.
The incident happened Sunday at the Mahoning County Democratic Party tent at the Canfield Fair in Canfield, near Youngstown. Party Chairman Chris Anderson said the individual was arrested after knocking volunteers down and was later found to have weapons.
Anderson said local law enforcement and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which was providing security for Acton, responded quickly.
“What happened at our tent today during today’s visit from Dr. Acton is reprehensible and should be condemned by leaders on all sides of the aisle,” he said.
Acton’s campaign said the individual lunged at her while armed, injuring multiple people. WKBN reported that Acton was not harmed.
A photograph from the scene, said to show the suspect in custody, appears to show a handgun lying on a park bench next to the man.
It was not immediately clear how the volunteers were injured or whether the suspect had a specific target or motive. The Mahoning County Democratic Party said the case is under investigation.
