10 killed, 64 injured in fireworks explosion at church festival in central Mexico
A fireworks explosion during festivities in central Mexico has killed 10 people and injured 64 others, according to local officials. The blast partially collapsed a church, trapping people beneath the debris.
The explosion happened at about 9 p.m. Saturday at a parish in Santa Maria Canchesda, a community in Temascalcingo in the State of Mexico, northwest of Mexico City. People had gathered outside a church for a fireworks display during traditional festival celebrations.
Authorities said fireworks material stored in a room used as a warehouse detonated, causing part of the church to collapse. Rescue crews worked through the night to free people who had been trapped.
The State of Mexico government said 10 people have been confirmed dead and 64 others were taken to hospitals for specialized treatment. Several children and two priests from the church were among the injured, local media reported.
Health authorities said the victims suffered injuries including traumatic wounds, head injuries, multiple contusions and first-, second- and third-degree burns.
State emergency workers, medical personnel, federal authorities and military forces have set up a joint command post to coordinate rescue operations and control remaining hazards at the scene.
