Man fatally shot by Birmingham officer after reportedly firing gun at homes
A man who was reportedly waving a firearm, trying to open vehicle doors and firing shots at at least one home was fatally shot by a Birmingham police officer after the suspect advanced toward the officer, according to police. No officers or civilians were injured.
The shooting happened at about 3:45 p.m. Monday in the 3100 block of Avenue I in Ensley after West Precinct officers were sent to a weapons call, according to the Birmingham Police Department.
The caller said a man was walking through the area while waving a firearm and pulling on vehicle doors. While officers were on their way, police received updated information that he was still waving the weapon and knocking on residential doors.
“One report stated that he fired shots toward residents,” Birmingham Police Sergeant Laquita Wade said in a briefing, adding that no one was injured. One residence was struck by bullets.
An officer arrived within 60 seconds and encountered the man. The officer gave verbal commands for him to drop the weapon, but the man advanced toward the officer, who then opened fire. The man, described only as an adult male, was fatally shot.
The scene includes several intersecting streets as investigators try to determine whether the man fired at one home or multiple residences. The identity of the suspect was not released.
