Multiple juveniles and adults are dead after a shooting and house fire in Billings, Montana, that happened on Sunday, according to officials. Authorities said the incident began as a family disturbance.
The shooting was reported at about 6:01 p.m. Sunday at a home at 315 White Star Circle, according to the Billings Police Department and the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office. Dispatchers could hear gunfire during the 911 call.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers saw a man in the backyard before hearing more gunshots. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Smoke was seen coming from the house before it became fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were unable to enter immediately because the scene had not been confirmed safe.
Officials said all parties involved, including the suspect, died as a result of the incident. The total number of people killed was not released, but the victims include several juveniles and adults, according to Yellowstone County Sheriff Kent O’Donnell.
The fire spread throughout the home before crews were able to suppress it. Fire Chief Matt Hoppel said the operation was complicated by the lack of fire hydrants in the subdivision. Nearby homes sustained minor heat damage.
Authorities have not released the circumstances of the incident but said it was initially reported as a family disturbance. Investigators are continuing to examine the scene.
