Kansas man calls 911 after killing partner and his 4 children, then shoots himself
A Kansas man called 911 to say he had killed his entire family and was about to kill himself, leading officers to rush to the home and arrive moments before he fired the final shot, according to officials. A woman and four children were found dead inside along with the suspected shooter.
The call was received at about 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday in Winfield, Kansas, according to Police Chief Robbie DeLong. Officers were already working another incident nearby and reached the home almost immediately.
The first officer was approaching the house when he heard a single gunshot and retreated. Police established a perimeter and initially treated the incident as a barricade because they had no indication that anyone else inside had been killed.
At about 10:57 a.m., after additional officers arrived and other attempts to resolve the situation were exhausted, police breached the front door. Officers found six people dead in the home.
The suspected shooter was identified as 53-year-old Ronald H. Williams Sr. The victims were identified as 44-year-old Kelly L. George and four children: 9-year-old Carol A. Williams, 7-year-old Ronald H. Williams Jr., 5-year-old Sarah K. Williams and 3-year-old Kelly M. Magee-Williams.
Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) Special Agent in Charge Jason Diaz said the victims were Williams’ partner and children.
Authorities believe the five victims were already dead when Williams called 911 and that the gunshot heard by the responding officer was the one that killed him.
“I believe when he called 911 that he was accurate in what he said, and when officers arrived on scene, that final gunshot wound was a self-inflicted one,” Diaz said.
The KBI has deployed special agents and its crime scene response team to assist Winfield police. Authorities said the killings were an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat.
Police had previously received calls about Williams confronting and yelling at people, as well as reports of gunfire.
Chief DeLong said officers had contact with Williams over erratic behavior within the past few weeks, but nothing suggested that he would kill his family.
“This was, in my 20-plus years, one of the hardest things I’ve ever seen,” Chief DeLong said.
