4 killed, 1 injured in Georgia shooting spree; suspect killed in shootout with deputies
Four people were killed and a fifth person was injured during a shooting spree in Burke County, Georgia, according to officials. The suspected gunman was later killed after opening fire on deputies following a vehicle chase.
The surviving victim was found after deputies responded to an RV on Screven Street in the town of Sardis shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to incident reports obtained by WJBF. He had been shot once in the chest and twice in the arm.
When deputies asked who shot him, the man identified the gunman as Adolphus Morris. Deputies began life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived.
On Sunday evening, deputies responded to a home on Twin Lakes Drive after receiving a report of an unresponsive person. They found a man and a woman dead inside, and both were pronounced dead at about 8:41 p.m.
Later that evening, deputies were asked to conduct a welfare check at a home on Tom Bargeron Road, near the first location. They found an open door and entered the home, where two women were found dead. Both were pronounced dead at about 10:17 p.m.
The four victims were between the ages of 25 and 45. Their identities have not been released, but Chief Deputy Lee Webster said at a briefing that their families have been notified.
Investigators identified Adolphus Christopher Morris as the suspect and learned that he was traveling in a red Ford Escape with his grandmother.
Deputies spotted the vehicle on Veterans Parkway near the intersection with Highway 56 North and attempted to pull it over, but Morris fled south on Highway 24 toward Sardis.
Other deputies deployed stop sticks ahead of the pursuit, deflating the vehicle’s tires. Morris continued into Sardis before losing control on a curve and crashing into a tree at an intersection in the center of town.
Morris got out of the vehicle and opened fire on deputies, who returned fire and struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His grandmother was not injured.
Webster said Morris had been a suspect in several previous investigations and that deputies had already been searching for him.
The circumstances surrounding all five shootings remain under investigation. An independent response team is investigating the deputy-involved shooting.
