Perez Hilton’s children were inside home minutes before self-harm livestream
Perez Hilton’s children, niece and sister were inside his Miami-area home minutes before he livestreamed himself cutting his body and repeatedly saying he wanted to die, according to a new statement from his family.
The relatives fled with the children when it became clear that Hilton was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself, the family said in a statement Thursday.
“Our highest priority right now is helping the children begin to heal from what they experienced,” the statement said. “An important part of that process is allowing them to safely return home and begin rebuilding a sense of security and normalcy.”
The livestream on Tuesday showed Hilton, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., covered in blood with dozens of apparent cuts across his face and body.
He could be seen harming himself with what appeared to be a knife and repeatedly saying he wanted to die, including by threatening to provoke a fatal confrontation with police.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls about the livestream and located Hilton alone inside his home.
Deputies initially withdrew while continuing to monitor the residence, a tactic officials said was intended to create time and distance during a mental health crisis when there was no immediate threat to others.
Hilton was eventually taken safely from the home and transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to a hospital for medical attention.
His family said Wednesday that very little information had been made available to them but confirmed that Hilton was able to communicate.
“The events of the past several days have been nearly unbearable for our family,” the family said Thursday, thanking the public for its continued support and prayers. Hilton is the father of three children.
