Over 20 shots fired into home of Georgia secretary of state aide; 2 arrested
More than 20 shots were fired into the Atlanta home of a senior aide to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger while he and his fiancée were inside, according to officials and social media posts. No one was injured, and two men were arrested.
Police responded to a report of gunfire at around 12:46 a.m. Thursday in the 300 block of Wellington Street SW. Witnesses told officers they saw two men firing toward the property, and shell casings were found nearby.
Robert Sinners, Raffensperger’s communications director, was home during the shooting, he confirmed to WSB-TV.
His fiancée, CBS Atlanta reporter Madeline Montgomery, said they “woke up to someone shooting over 20 times into the living room and front bedroom.”
“Literally everywhere we look, we find a new bullet hole,” Montgomery wrote alongside photos showing damage to the exterior, a shattered window and bullet holes inside the front bedroom.
Officers saw two men matching descriptions provided by witnesses and chased them on foot when they attempted to flee. Both were detained a short time later.
The men were identified as Gregory O’Neal Vaughn, 26, and Jermaine Darcel Howard, 29. Police said a firearm and multiple rounds of ammunition were recovered from Howard.
Both men remained in custody Thursday with multiple charges pending. Police said the shooting was not politically motivated, but no other possible motive was disclosed.
