San Bernardino County detective stable after shooting; suspect killed
A San Bernardino County sheriff’s detective is in stable condition after undergoing surgery for internal injuries suffered during an exchange of gunfire in a remote area of Los Angeles County. One suspect was killed.
The shooting happened shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday near 130th Street East and Avenue R-2 in the Littlerock area of Palmdale.
Officials said the detective was conducting a criminal investigation when gunfire was exchanged with a suspect. Authorities are still working to determine whether a search warrant was being served at the time.
The detective was shot just below the lower rib cage, causing internal injuries, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said at a briefing on Wednesday. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded and provided aid to both the detective and the suspect.
The detective was airlifted to Antelope Valley Medical Center aboard a Los Angeles County sheriff’s rescue helicopter. Paramedics stabilized him during the flight before he underwent surgery.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that the surgery was successful and the detective remains in stable condition. He is continuing to recover and is expected to be released from the hospital in the near future.
The detective, whose name has not been released, is in his 30s and has served with the sheriff’s office since 2014.
The suspect died following the exchange of gunfire. Officials had not determined how many shots were fired, and the suspect’s identity was not immediately released.
Authorities said they did not believe there were any outstanding suspects who posed a danger to the community.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the shooting.
