71-year-old woman fires gun inside police station in Florida
A 71-year-old woman fired a handgun inside a police department in Florida before responding officers shot her, according to officials. No officers or civilian employees were injured, and the woman is in critical condition.
The incident happened shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday at the Port Orange Police Department, near Daytona Beach. The woman, identified as Linda Jean Croteau, entered the main lobby carrying a handgun and spoke with civilian employees in the records section, Police Chief Manuel Marino said at a briefing.
The woman then brandished the weapon and fired one round in the direction of the employees, causing an active shooter call to go out over the police radio. She remained in the lobby for several minutes before leaving the building.
Officers who responded confronted the woman outside the lobby, where she was still holding the handgun, Marino said. Three officers were involved in the shooting.
Croteau was taken to a hospital in critical condition. All officers and civilian employees at the department are safe and accounted for.
Police said there is no threat to the community. Officials did not release information about a possible motive.
