2 killed when small plane crashes in Tampa, Florida
Two people were killed after a small plane crashed in a wooded area of Tampa, Florida, according to officials. The aircraft had taken off from Tampa Executive Airport.
The crash happened at about 8:15 a.m. Thursday near the 7600 block of North U.S. Highway 301, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The aircraft, a Lancair Evolution, went down in a wooded area that officials said was accessible to emergency crews.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue began receiving multiple 911 calls about a downed aircraft at 8:16 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found the plane heavily engulfed in flames.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control in less than 10 minutes, but both people on board were pronounced dead at the scene. No first responders were injured.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said the damage to the aircraft was extensive. The cause of the crash was not immediately known, and officials did not release information about the flight plan.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate, with the NTSB leading the investigation.
