3 killed, 15 injured in bombing at Moscow restaurant
A device has exploded at a restaurant in central Moscow during a private event reportedly attended by high-ranking Russian military officials, killing 3 people and injuring 15 others, according to officials.
The explosion happened at about 8:10 p.m. on Saturday near the restaurant’s outdoor dining area on Kudrinskaya Square. Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee confirmed that an improvised explosive device had detonated, according to state media TASS.
An unidentified woman, a security guard and a visitor were killed in the explosion. The 15 injured victims suffered wounds of varying severity.
Reports said senior military officials were attending the event, including Alexander Chayko, who was appointed commander-in-chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces in May. It was not immediately clear if he was injured.
Chayko was the most senior Russian military officer in Ukraine at the beginning of the 2022 invasion and commanded Russian forces when they entered Bucha.
The European Union sanctioned him over his alleged responsibility for atrocities committed during the occupation, where Russian forces carried out summary executions, torture and other abuses against civilians.
Currently, as head of the Aerospace Forces, he oversees the branch responsible for launching missiles against Ukrainian cities.
Authorities did not immediately identify a suspect, disclose a possible motive or say whether Chayko or the military gathering were targeted.
Police and members of Russia’s National Guard restricted access around the nearby Kudrinskaya Square Building, while several roads were temporarily closed.
