13 killed in plane crash during sightseeing flight over Peru’s Nazca Lines

Thirteen people were killed after a small plane crashed during a sightseeing flight over Peru’s Nazca Lines, according to local officials. Several foreign nationals were among those killed.

The plane crashed on Saturday in the Pueblo Viejo area near Nazca, about 275 miles southeast of Lima, according to regional officials. The aircraft was operated by Aerodiana and had departed from Pisco for a flight over the Nazca Lines and surrounding geoglyphs.

At least 13 people were on board the plane, all of whom were killed. Officials did not immediately release their identities or nationalities.

Preliminary information indicated that the aircraft experienced an emergency during the flight, according to the Vista Alegre district municipality. The nature of the emergency was not disclosed.

Emergency workers and local authorities responded to the crash site. Images from the scene showed wreckage scattered across a desert area.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
