1 dead, at least 14 injured in shooting at Chicago park
A man was killed and at least 14 other people were injured when gunfire erupted as police tried to disperse a large gathering at a park on Chicago’s South Side, according to police.
The shooting happened shortly after 11:30 p.m. Saturday at Washington Park in the 5400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, according to the Chicago Police Department. Officers were trying to clear several gatherings from the park, including a reunion for former residents of the Robert Taylor Homes public housing complex, when one or more people opened fire into the crowd.
“Somebody across the street from the park started shooting into the park, so it was not necessarily anything to do with what was happening in the park,” 20th Ward Ald. Jeanette Taylor said.
Rontonio M. Guterz, a 35-year-old Chicago man, was shot multiple times in the body and was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The other victims include men and women between the ages of 21 and 47. A 47-year-old woman was listed in serious condition, while 10 other victims were reported in fair to good condition. The conditions of three people were not immediately known.
Police initially reported 10 victims, but several additional people who had been shot were located afterward. It was not immediately clear how many people fired or what led to the shooting.
Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspect or suspects.
