A child was killed and another was injured when two shooters opened fire on a group of young people outside a convenience store in Washington, D.C., according to police. Two possible shooters remain at large.

The shooting happened at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of Kenilworth Avenue, in the northeast part of the city near D.C. Route 295, according to Metropolitan Police Department interim chief Jeffery Carroll. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found two juveniles suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police believe one of the victims is 12 years old and the other may be 13.

The shooting happened in the parking lot area of a convenience store, where the two victims were part of a larger group, Carroll said. Investigators believe two shooters approached the group and opened fire, hitting both children.

“There was a large number of shots that were fired in a very small period of time,” Carroll said.

Police said traffic was moving along nearby D.C. 295 when the shooting happened and asked anyone who may have been in the area or seen anything to contact investigators.

Carroll said Washington had seen an uptick in fatal shootings over the past week, but that there did not appear to be any connection between those cases.
