Video shows gunmen attacking home of Mexican governor indicted in U.S. cartel case
A video posted on social media shows the moment gunmen opened fire on a home once inhabited by Mexican Governor Ruben Rocha Moya, who was recently indicted in a U.S. cartel case. The recording was apparently made by one of the attackers.
Authorities responded to reports of a shooting at a home at about 10:12 a.m. Saturday in Culiacán, the capital of Sinaloa state in northwest Mexico. Officials confirmed the home belongs to Ruben Rocha Moya but said it had been unoccupied by him for more than a decade. No injuries were reported.
The video, posted on social media and apparently filmed by one of the attackers, shows several men arriving outside the home in what appears to be an SUV before getting out and firing dozens of rounds at the property with assault rifles.
One of the gunmen is seen wearing what appears to be a bulletproof vest and a sombrero while carrying an AR-style rifle. Local reports said witnesses described a group of armed men firing high-powered rifles at the three-story white home, causing only property damage.

Rocha, a member of Mexico’s ruling Morena party, temporarily left office as governor of Sinaloa on May 2, days after U.S. prosecutors in New York unsealed an indictment accusing him and other current and former Sinaloa officials of working with the Sinaloa Cartel.
The indictment accused Rocha of helping the cartel traffic fentanyl, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine into the United States.
Prosecutors said the officials used their positions to shield cartel leaders from arrest, pass sensitive law enforcement and military information to traffickers, protect drug shipments and allow cartel violence to continue without consequence.
U.S. prosecutors said Rocha was elected governor in 2021 after the Chapitos, the faction of the Sinaloa Cartel led by the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, helped him get elected by kidnapping and intimidating political rivals. Prosecutors alleged that Rocha promised to protect the group and allowed it to operate with impunity in Sinaloa.
Mexico’s general prosecutor’s office rejected the U.S. request to extradite Rocha. President Claudia Sheinbaum and other political figures have also rejected the allegations against him.
No arrests were immediately announced in the shooting, and authorities have not said whether the attack was connected to the U.S. case.
