Video captures gunfire interrupting church service in Sinaloa, Mexico
A gunfight between Mexican troops and gunmen interrupted a church service in northwestern Mexico, with shots ringing out as a priest told worshippers to close the doors and stay inside.
The shooting happened Sunday in Los Mochis, a city in the western state of Sinaloa, after members of Mexico’s National Guard came under fire from a group of gunmen, according to state security officials. The troops returned fire with help from other security forces.
Video from inside a church showed a priest delivering his sermon when several gunshots were heard nearby, startling people in the congregation.
“Please don’t go outside,” the priest said. “Close the doors and don’t go outside. Those who are outside, come inside and close the door.”
More shots were heard after the doors were closed, turning the church into a temporary shelter.
“We’re going to remain silent and listen to see if the shots have stopped,” the priest said. “Let’s remain calm and take a deep breath.”
The gunfight led to a pursuit through Los Mochis as troops and other security forces chased a Chevrolet Tahoe believed to be carrying the gunmen, Infobae México reported, citing local media.
The SUV eventually crashed into a tree in the center median of a street. Security forces arrested eight people and seized several weapons. Four suspected gunmen were injured during the confrontation and received medical treatment.
Officials did not report any injuries among the worshippers.
Sinaloa has been the epicenter of a violent internal conflict within the Sinaloa Cartel between factions aligned with the sons of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and longtime cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
