Venezuelan man arrested near the White House told police he wanted to kill Trump

A Venezuelan man who was arrested with 3 firearms and ammunition near the White House told police that voices in his head were telling him to kill U.S. President Donald Trump, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said on Friday.

U.S. Secret Service (USSS) officers approached Ronny Yordrix Guanipa Chrinos on Thursday night after noticing he acted suspiciously inside a vehicle parked on Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C. During the encounter, Chrinos allegedly told officers that voices in his head had told him to travel to the capital and kill Trump.

Officers also discovered that the vehicle Chrinos was using had been reported stolen. Chrinos then acknowledged that weapons were inside, leading agents to recover an AR-15-style rifle, a MAC-10 and a Glock 43X, along with dozens of rounds of ammunition, according to DHS.

Chrinos was arrested and faces multiple charges, including carrying a rifle outside a home or business, unlawful transportation of firearms, possession of unregistered firearms and ammunition, carrying a pistol without a license, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He is also charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged an immigration detainer after his arrest. Chrinos is currently being held by the U.S. Marshals Service, according to DHS.

Officials said Chrinos entered the United States through Texas in March 2024 and was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol. He was subsequently released, DHS said.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin credited Secret Service officers with stopping the incident before anyone was harmed. USSS Director Sean Curran said the encounter demonstrated the importance of officers’ training in responding to potentially dangerous situations.

The investigation comes as the Secret Service continues to face threats against the president and other individuals under its protection.
