Utah governor shares details about suspect in Charlie Kirk case
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox on Sunday said the man accused in the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology,” citing information provided by the suspect’s family and acquaintances.
Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Cox discussed the ongoing investigation into Tyler Robinson, who has been charged in connection with Kirk’s death. The governor said the suspect’s behavior and beliefs appeared to be politically motivated, based on accounts from those close to him.
“That information comes from the people around him — from his family members and friends,” Cox said when asked to elaborate on comments he previously made to “The Wall Street Journal.“
Cox emphasized that his assessment was not politically driven.
“If this was MAGA and a radicalized MAGA person, I would be saying that as well,” he said, underscoring that any form of political extremism should be condemned.
While Robinson has not cooperated with investigators, Cox said, others close to him have spoken with law enforcement. This includes his family and roommate.
Further details about the suspect’s motives or specific affiliations have not yet been made public. Authorities have not commented on whether the alleged ideological influence will play a role in the prosecution’s case.
The killing of Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative figure and founder of Turning Point USA, has drawn national attention, especially from leaders and media outlets on both sides of the political spectrum.
Robinson is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
The investigation remains ongoing.
