Ukrainian Embassy in Washington evacuated after suspicious package found nearby
A suspicious object found near the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, D.C., on Friday led to a temporary evacuation and the closure of nearby roads, including the Key Bridge. Authorities later determined the object posed no threat, and the embassy said it was resuming operations.
The U.S. Secret Service said its police officers were notified of the item at about 8:40 a.m. on Friday. The Metropolitan Police Department and other agencies responded to the scene and closed several roads as a precaution while they investigated.
The object was found near the entrance to the embassy’s consular section, according to Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry. Embassy staff and visitors were temporarily evacuated while law enforcement officers and bomb technicians examined the item.
The road closures included the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which connects Washington with Rosslyn, Virginia, across the Potomac River. The closures affected traffic around Georgetown during the morning commute.
After the inspection, Ukrainian charge d’affaires Denys Sienik told Reuters, U.S. law enforcement had determined the object posed no threat. The area around the embassy was reopened, and consular services were expected to resume shortly.
The Secret Service said the investigation was ongoing but did not provide further details about the object or explain what led to its discovery.
