U.S. strikes Iranian ports but official says war has not restarted – Fox News
The U.S. military has carried out strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Port and Bandar Abbas, a senior U.S. official told Fox News, as Iranian media reported multiple explosions at the sites. The official said the strikes do not mark a restart of the war.
The strikes were reported on Thursday, amid a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran and continuing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, where the U.S. has moved to block Iranian ships while Iran has maintained its own blockade.
Fox News correspondent Jennifer Griffin said a senior U.S. official confirmed the strikes on Qeshm Port and Bandar Abbas, two strategic locations along Iran’s southern coast near the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian media reported explosions in the same areas, but there was no immediate word on casualties, damage or the specific targets hit. The Pentagon had not released a formal statement on the strikes.
Iran also claimed its forces had targeted three U.S. destroyers, but there was no immediate confirmation from the U.S. military.
The operation comes days after President Donald Trump announced the start of Operation Freedom, a U.S. effort to escort ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz after Iran blocked shipping through one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.
The operation began on Monday, but Iran responded by striking tankers, an oil facility in the United Arab Emirates and a residential building in Oman. Trump later announced the operation would be suspended.
A senior U.S. official also confirmed to Griffin reporting by The Wall Street Journal that Saudi Arabia and Kuwait had abruptly halted permission for the U.S. to use their bases and airspace for Operation Freedom, a decision the official said has since been reversed.
