A sheriff’s deputy has been shot in Harris County, Texas, and a possible suspect fled in a patrol car, according to preliminary information from officials. The deputy’s condition is unknown.

The shooting was reported on Wednesday in the 1100 block of Bayou near the East Freeway in eastern Harris County, which includes the Houston area, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. Officials did not provide further details about the circumstances.

Gonzalez said a possible suspect fled in a patrol car. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said an active search was underway and asked residents to avoid the area.

Authorities have not identified the deputy or the possible suspect, or said what led up to the shooting. Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to call 911. People with information about the incident can also contact the sheriff’s office at 713-221-6000.
