Texas Air National Guard F-16 crashes in Michigan

An F-16 fighter jet has crashed in northern Michigan, according to emergency officials and local media. An evacuation order has been issued near the crash zone.

Grand Traverse County Emergency Management issued the evacuation order on Thursday, telling residents to move away from the intersection of County Road 633 and Jefferson Place, south of Traverse City.

Officials initially ordered residents along County Road 633, from Jefferson Place to Blair Townhall Road, to shelter indoors and close windows and vents. Minutes later, they announced an evacuation within one mile of the crash site.

The National Guard identified the aircraft as an F-16 from the Texas Air National Guard’s 149th Fighter Wing, according to WJBK. The wing is based at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas and trains F-16 pilots.

The pilot ejected before the crash and is in stable condition, the Texas Air National Guard said. The Guard confirmed that the F-16 belonged to its fleet and was taking part in a joint training mission.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known. No injuries or property damage has been reported.
