A convicted murderer who escaped from a Tennessee prison has been captured in Missouri after his vehicle became stuck off a road. Authorities tracked the vehicle using Flock and a police helicopter before a trooper arrested him.

The arrest happened at about 11:34 a.m. Tuesday along County Road 515 in Carroll County, northeast of Kansas City, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The suspect tried to drive off the roadway but became stuck and was taken into custody without incident.

Jacob Allen Morley is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for the 2022 killing of Cody Birchfield in Carter County, Tennessee. He escaped October 26 from the state prison in Tiptonville, in northwestern Tennessee, setting off a multistate manhunt.

At about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) notified Missouri authorities that the suspect might be traveling west on Interstate 70 near Independence, a Kansas City suburb.

Officers used Flock license plate-reading cameras to locate the vehicle. Further camera detections helped undercover officers find it traveling south on Missouri Route 291 in Liberty.

Authorities from multiple agencies began moving into the area and coordinating their response because they believed the suspect was armed with multiple weapons. A Kansas City Police Department helicopter located the vehicle and followed it.

The suspect then traveled east along Missouri Route 210 and onto Missouri Route 10, entering Carroll County before turning onto County Road 515, where the vehicle became stuck.

The highway patrol said no agencies were engaged in an active pursuit with emergency equipment activated during the operation.

Kansas City and Independence police, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the U.S. Marshals Service and a career criminal task force assisted in the operation.
