A student was injured in a shooting outside a high school in Omaha, Nebraska, according to police. Another student was taken into custody after entering the school and going to class.

Officers received a call about a shooting at Burke High School at 7:33 a.m. on Wednesday, Omaha Police Deputy Chief Keith Williamson said in a briefing. The incident happened during school drop-off in a parking lot behind the baseball field.

Williamson said two students were involved in a physical altercation when a loud noise, possibly a gunshot, was heard. One student suffered an arm injury, and the other fled the scene.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy arrived first, began treating the injured student and found a firearm at the scene.

Officers identified the suspect using a photograph provided by a witness and found him inside the school, where he was taken into custody. Both students are under 18.

“The suspect entered the school, went to class, and was safely removed from there,” Williamson said. He said the altercation occurred entirely outside the building.
