Senator Tuberville targets ‘furry’ pilots in speech attacking transgender people
U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville claimed that transgender people are becoming violent and warned that airline passengers could be flying with pilots who have a “deranged fetish” for dressing as animals. He also called for doctors providing gender-transition treatment to be imprisoned for life.
The Alabama Republican made the remarks on the Senate floor on Tuesday while standing beside a poster showing a pregnant man emoji beneath the words “TRANSGENDERISM IS A MENTAL DISEASE.”
Tuberville said he would call transgender people “gender confused” because he rejected the idea that someone could change their sex. He accused “Democrat socialists” of orchestrating a plan to destroy the country by undermining Christian values.
“I’m not going to use the leftist preferred terminology of transgender because it implies that it is possible for a person to change their God-given sex, which it is not,” he said.
Tuberville described furry culture as “a bizarre subset of transgenderism” involving sexual attraction to animals and dressing up as them.
“The fact that many, listen to this, that many airline pilots, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers are part of the furry community,” Tuberville said. “Lord, help us. It’s terrifying when you think about this.”
“When you walk onto a commercial flight, it’s possible that the pilot flying your plane could have a deranged fetish of dressing up like an animal,” he added. “You can’t make this up.”
Tuberville cited the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and the assassination attempt against President Trump to support his claim that transgender people were becoming violent.
He alleged that Tyler Robinson, the suspect in Kirk’s killing, was involved in “transgender furry culture,” referred to the suspect’s transgender partner and described inscriptions on ammunition as associated with transgender culture.
“It’s no wonder this lunatic went after Charlie Kirk,” he said. “A gender confused person assassinated him for what he believed.”
Tuberville also claimed that Thomas Matthew Crooks, who attempted to assassinate Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024, had been involved in online furry culture.
He cited an unidentified 2022 study which he said found transgender youths were at the highest risk of violent radicalization.
Tuberville also accused doctors of withholding information about lasting consequences and performing procedures on minors without informing their parents. He claimed patients often regretted surgery and hormone treatment.
“Every single one of these doctors should have their medical licenses revoked and should spend the rest of their lives in prison,” he said.
