Sen. Amy Klobuchar announces bid for Minnesota governor

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar announced Thursday that she’s running for governor in Minnesota, writing in a post on X, “I believe we must stand up for what’s right. And fix what’s wrong.”

The announcement comes after Gov. Tim Walz said earlier this month that he would not seek a third term.

In her campaign launch, Klobuchar pointed to several pressing issues facing the state, including health care, affordability and ongoing immigration enforcement efforts in Minneapolis.

“I’m running for every Minnesotan who wants ICE and its abusive tactics out of the state we love,” she said.

Political climate in Minnesota

Klobuchar is serving her fourth term in the Senate after being first elected in 2006 and previously mounted a presidential bid during the crowded 2020 Democratic primary.

She’s the first prominent Democrat to enter the 2026 governor’s race following Walz’s decision — and candidacy arrives at a pivotal moment for the state.

Minnesota is gripping with heightened immigration enforcement tensions and scrutiny over an alleged child care fraud scheme, which Walz cited as a major factor in his decision not to run again.

A Klobuchar victory would reshape the Senate landscape. Sen. Tina Smith is not seeking reelection, setting up a potentially competitive race.

If elected governor, Klobuchar would be positioned to appoint a temporary replacement to her Senate seat until a special election is held. Her current term is not set to expire until 2030.

The race for governor

Given Minnesota’s recent Democratic track record, Klobuchar is likely to enter the race with significant advantages in name recognition, fundraising and statewide support.

But to win, she will need to defeat a Republican field that is already taking shape.

Candidates include former state Sen. Scott Jensen — whom Walz defeated in 2022 — MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, state House Speaker Lisa Demuth, state Rep. Kristin Robbins, and businessman Kendall Qualls.
