Russian strikes hit science academy and medical facility in Kyiv
Russian strikes struck a science academy building and a medical facility in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, killing at least one person and injuring six others, including three children, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy said on Monday that the casualties were reported at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine building, which sustained a direct hit. He said a separate Russian strike hit a medical facility in central Kyiv during the afternoon, where first responders worked to extinguish a large fire.
Ukraine’s state language commissioner said two floors of the academy building were destroyed and people climbed out of windows to escape the flames.
The commissioner’s office reported that two scientists had died and that several others could not be reached, while cautioning that casualty information was still being clarified. That account could not immediately be reconciled with the one death reported by Zelenskyy.
Local media identified the damaged medical facility as Dobrobut and reported that its upper floors were wrecked.
Zelenskyy called for stronger international pressure on the financing and production of Russian weapons, appealing to Ukraine’s partners for a response.
“Such brutal strikes must not be ignored. There must be a response – with global resolve and strength,” Zelenskyy said. “We are counting on the strength of Europe, America, and our other partners who can help protect lives.”
