Russian drone hits train near Ukraine-Poland border after Boris Johnson passes through

A Russian drone struck a train near Ukraine’s border with Poland shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European security officials passed through the area, according to Ukrainian authorities. No casualties were reported.

The drone hit a locomotive at Yahodyn station in western Ukraine, about 2 miles from the Polish border. Ukraine’s state railway company said a dispatcher detected the drone and ordered passengers to evacuate the train about 15 minutes before the impact.

The railway company said the diplomatic train had left the station earlier than scheduled because train movements are regularly changed in response to the threat of Russian strikes. It said the diplomatic train may have been the intended target.

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had been traveling with security advisers from several European Union countries and former European leaders after attending a conference in Kyiv. Former CIA Director David Petraeus was aboard another train at Yahodyn station when the drone struck.

Russia said it had hit railway infrastructure in western Ukraine, according to the BBC.

“I don’t know what warped logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border this morning,” Johnson said in a statement. He called on Western countries to provide Ukraine with more air defenses and to use frozen Russian assets to support the country.
