Pope Leo XIV to undergo surgery to remove lung nodule
Pope Leo XIV will undergo surgery to remove a small nodule from his lung after doctors discovered it during recent medical examinations. The 71-year-old pontiff said it was detected at a very early stage.
Leo announced the procedure Sunday during his prayer address to people gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. He said the operation was scheduled for the coming days.
“The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it,” the pope said.
“I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers,” Leo told those gathered at the Vatican.
Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, told reporters that the surgery would take place early this week at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in Rome, according to Vatican News. His recovery after the operation is expected to take about one week.
Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, Leo became the first U.S.-born pope when he was elected on May 8, 2025. He succeeded Pope Francis, who died the previous month.
