Police shoot man who tried to set apartment on fire during standoff in San Diego
Police shot a man who allegedly set fires during a SWAT standoff at an apartment building near downtown San Diego, according to officials. The standoff began after police received a report that he had threatened his mother with a knife.
The incident began at about 1 p.m. on Tuesday when officers were called to an apartment building at Sixth Avenue and Cedar Street, where a man had reportedly threatened to attack his mother with a knife, according to San Diego police.
SWAT officers responded to the building and were able to help the woman get out, but the man barricaded himself inside the apartment, police said. It was not immediately known whether the woman suffered any injuries.
Police said the man later began setting things on fire inside the apartment. Smoke could be seen coming from windows of the building as firefighters responded to the scene.
San Diego Fire-Rescue crews began evacuating people from the building while police continued to deal with the barricaded suspect.
At some point during the standoff, police opened fire on the man. Emergency responders later performed CPR on him, but police did not immediately release his condition.
The suspect’s name has not been released. No officers were injured.
