Police identify gunman in Idaho In-N-Out shooting that killed 3
Police have identified the gunman who killed three people and injured seven others at an In-N-Out restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho. The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an off-duty state trooper and an armed citizen returned fire.
Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks identified the gunman on Sunday as 24-year-old Chad Williams. The shooting happened at about 2:29 p.m. on Saturday at the In-N-Out on Blue Lakes Boulevard North, near the Twin Falls Visitor Center.
Hicks said multiple people called 911 as dispatchers heard screaming and reports of gunfire in the background. Officers arrived to an “extremely chaotic scene” and began searching for Williams while helping medical personnel reach the victims.
Three victims were killed and seven others were injured, an increase from the two injuries reported by officials on Saturday. Two of the survivors have been treated and released, three remain hospitalized in stable condition and two are in critical condition.
Police said an off-duty state trooper and an armed citizen engaged the suspect by returning fire during the attack. Their involvement explains footage and earlier reports that appeared to show more than one person firing a weapon.
“We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties,” Hicks said.
The suspect was later found dead near the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police believe he acted alone, but authorities are still working to establish a motive and the full sequence of events. His family has been notified and is cooperating with authorities.
The suspect is not included among the three victims killed, bringing the overall death toll to four.
“I want to extend my deepest thanks to the off-duty trooper and the good citizen who engaged the shooter,” Twin Falls County Sheriff Jack Johnson said. “These people are true heroes in our community, and their actions diverted the shooter and no doubt saved many lives.”
Minutes after police arrived and began searching for the suspect, a Twin Falls officer was involved in another shooting. No one was injured, and the officer’s actions are being reviewed by the Jerome Police Department.
Police said more information about the circumstances of the second shooting will be released in the coming days.
Officials also rejected social media posts that falsely identified a man named Amer as the shooter or claimed he was a member of a fire department. Hicks said both claims are false and that the man had no involvement in the attack.
