New Orleans police hired and issued gun to illegal immigrant
A New Orleans police officer was unlawfully hired and issued a firearm despite being in the United States illegally, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The officer has been detained by ICE agents.
DHS identified the officer as Larry Temah, 46, a citizen of Cameroon. DHS said Temah entered the United States legally in 2015 on a visitor visa and was granted conditional residency in 2016 after marrying a U.S. citizen.
The agency said his application for permanent residency was denied in 2022 due to fraud, leaving him in the country illegally. DHS said he was nonetheless issued a gun and badge, despite being legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.
“It’s a felony for illegal aliens to even possess a firearm,” DHS said in a statement provided to Fox News, adding that Temah “is breaking the law with every step he takes in this country illegally” and accusing New Orleans of operating as a sanctuary city that ignores immigration detainers.
The New Orleans Police Department said it verified the officer’s work eligibility through ICE’s E-Verify system before hiring him and received no ICE detainer. The department said jail and detainer decisions are handled by the Sheriff’s Office and said any claim that it broke the law is false.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said she spoke with New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, who told her the city has adopted new policies and is cooperating with ICE.
“I still have serious concerns about how this occurred and about the hiring process,” Murrill added. “I will continue to seek answers from all parties involved.”
